Chocolate Hemp Spread - No-tella

One of my favorite snacks used to be apple slices, dipped into Nutella. It was good with lots of other things too, spread on toast, pancakes, and waffles, paired with banana slices and made into a sandwich, warmed up and drizzled over ice cream, or just straight off the spoon. Unfortunately I had to give that chocolaty treat up when I found out I was allergic to nuts. *sad-face* So what's a girl to do? Why come up with her own version of course! Introducing Chocolate Hemp Spread, aka No-tella.


So how did I get around my nut allergy, and make this yummy spread? I used hemp seeds! Not familiar with hemp seeds? Let me give you a little info on them.

Hemp seeds are considered the most nutritious seed in the world. They are a complete protein, which makes them a great protein source for vegetarians and vegans, or anyone really, as the protein contained in hemp seeds is easier to digest, then that found in meats, eggs, and cow milk products. They contain Omega 3 and 6 essential fats, which makes them ideal as an anti-inflammatory agent. They're also a great source of fiber, iron, and a host of vitamins and minerals.




Of course I can't eat it the way I used to, with such things as pancakes and toast, but I can enjoy it as a dip for fruits and vegetables, add it to my daily smoothie, and sometimes even add a spoonful to my morning coffee for a mocha treat. It's delicious, and so close to the real thing, it's almost unbelievable. It's rich, creamy, and oh so chocolaty. Now this spread is plenty sweet to me, but I eat very little sweets, so some people may prefer their chocolate spread a bit more sweet. Just add an additional tablespoon or two of honey, until your desired sweetness level is reached.



Chocolate Hemp Spread {No-tella}

Ingredients

1 cup hulled hemp seeds
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup hemp seed oil (coconut oil may be substituted)
1/4 cup honey (maple syrup may be substituted)
3 - 4 tablespoons hemp milk (coconut milk may be substituted)

Directions

Place all of the ingredients into the bowl of a food processor (starting with 3 tablespoons of milk).
Process for two minutes, stopping every 30 seconds to scrap down the sides of the bowl.
After 1 minute and 30 seconds, add the other tablespoon of milk if you prefer the mixture to be thinner.
Taste and add additional honey if you'd like it sweeter. Process to combine. Mixture should be smooth and creamy.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

  4. This is my first visit here, and this recipe called to me. My sister, who loved nuts, found she was allergic last year, this would be perfect for her! LOVE it! I did a little looking around while I was here, I was wondering why you did not enjoy your No-tella with pancakes like you used to? I see you are a very healthy eater, are you gluten free? Why no pancakes? If you know me, I have been on a waffle obsession since I found I could make them with gluten-free baking mix, so I was just interested in why you don't eat pancakes?? I'm nosey that way! LOL And I also noticed that you are from Southern Indiana! I'm north of you in Fort Wayne!!!! Nice to meet you. Pinning and sending this recipe to my sister, thanks.

    1. Hi Neighbor! :) How awesome to find a fellow Indiana blogger. I live in an itty bitty town called French Lick, which most people have never heard of.

      I adore pancakes Nikki, but after becoming gluten intolerant, AND not being able to eat grains, which is what most gluten free mixes are made out of, I gave them up. I'm even allergic to nuts and coconut! :( So my menu is limited.

      I love this hemp spread, and I hope your sister enjoys it as much as I do. Nice meeting you. :)
