I first heard of stuffed-crust pizza in the mid 90's when Pizza Hut came out with it. Boy was it good. I was never one to eat the outer edge of the crust until that brilliant idea came along. Alas I don't eat at Pizza Hut anymore since their quality has went down so much, and now make my own homemade pizza. My family and I think homemade taste loads better then a restaurant or store bought version. We like the fact that we can customize them to suit our taste too.
This pizza/cheeseburger combo, with yummy melted cheese in the crust has become a family favorite, and has been on the menu for the last 3 weeks for our weekly pizza and movie night. I make two pizzas for our family of four, and there are never any leftovers.
Stuffed-Crust Bacon Double Cheeseburger Pizza
1 recipe for Easy No Cook Pizza Sauce
1 recipe for Perfect Homemade Pizza Crust
4 - 6 mozzarella cheese sticks per pizza, frozen
1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups colby/jack shredded cheese, divided
6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled, divided
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Prepare the pizza sauce and set aside.
Prepare the pizza crust and spread out on 2 - 12 inch pizza pans, pushing the dough out past the edges of the pan a bit.
Place the cheese sticks around the edge of the pizza crust, cutting them to fit if necessary. Pull the edge of the dough up and over the cheese, and tuck in securely, sealing the dough around the cheese. Set aside.
Brown the ground beef, onion, salt and pepper over medium heat in a large pan. Stir occasionally, breaking up the beef and cook until no pink remains.
Drain grease and stir in Worcestershire sauce. Set aside.
Spread pizza sauce over crusts, then layer with cooked ground beef, shredded cheese, and bacon.
Bake for 10 - 12 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly, and just starting to brown.
Remove from oven and allow to cool for a couple of minutes, cut into slices and serve.
*Cooks notes: Make sure the cheese sticks are frozen before you wrap them in the pizza dough. If not they will melt into nothingness during the baking process.
If you want to go all-out with the cheeseburger theme, sprinkle some chopped lettuce, tomato and pickle on top of the pizza after you remove it from the oven.
