My fellow #SundaySupper tastemakers and I, have headed west to pay homage to the humble cowboy cook this week. We’re sharing our best cowboy recipes made with Certified Angus Beef® brand.

What's a cowboy burger you ask? They're delicious burgers topped with bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, grilled onions and barbecue sauce! Some burger, huh?! My husband is pretty picky about his food, he owned several restaurants in his younger days, so it takes a lot to impress him. Well this burger did. My husband labeled it one of the BEST burgers he has ever eaten, and I agree.

These burgers also get a shot of flavor from what’s added to the beef before it’s cooked. (you’ll see what I mean in the recipe below) It makes for a burger that’s incredibly juicy and full of flavor. The burgers are so filling and satisfying, you almost don't need any side dishes! I urge you to try these at your next cookout, and we think you'll agree. These burgers rock!

Grilled Cowboy Burgers

Ingredients
  • 6 slices bacon, cooked crisp
  • 2 pounds Certified Angus Beef® brand ground chuck
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon steak sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 large sweet onion, cut in half, then cut into slices
  • Drizzle of olive oil
  • Additional Garnishes: Your favorite BBQ sauce, cheese slices, (I used colby/jack) lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles.
Directions
Place ground beef in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper.
Add brown sugar mixture to the ground beef and mix lightly just till combined. Form into 6 burgers.
Grill burgers on a well-oiled grate, over direct medium heat, for 4 - 5 minutes, or until seared and browned.
Flip burgers over and continue cooking 4 - 5 minutes more, or until done to desired level.
Meanwhile, heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add onions and cook for 10 minutes, or until softened and browned, stirring frequently.
Spread both sides of buns with BBQ sauce.
Add burgers to buns and top with a slice of cheese, followed by grilled onions, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and pickles.
Serve immediately.
Note: Mix the beef and brown sugar mixture just till combined, handling as little as possible. Over mixing the ground beef will result in a tough burger.
