My whole family loves chili dogs, unfortunately for my husband and I they don't like us. Instead of giving up one of our favorite treats though, I decided to try and make my own chili sauce. I hoped that by making it myself, I could control what went in it and make it less heartburn worthy.
After doing some online research and tweaking the recipe a few times, I've come up with a winner for us. This thick and mild sauce is delicious served over all beef hot dogs with chopped onion and shredded cheese, and nestled in a bun for a classic Chili Dog. It also taste great spooned on top of fries along with some shredded cheese, which is my daughters favorite way of eating it.
Hot Dog Chili Sauce
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
2 green onions, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon Mexican oregano
1 cup water
1 - 6 ounce can tomato paste
1 tablespoon brown sugar
Sea salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste
Directions
In a large skillet brown the beef, onion. and garlic over medium heat, until onions are softened and meat is cooked though.
Stir in the cumin and oregano and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes.
Add the water, tomato paste, and brown sugar, and stir to combine.
Bring to a boil, cover, then reduce heat to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Place cooked hot dogs in buns and top with chili sauce. Sprinkle with chopped onion and cheese is you'd like and serve.
